Tsutsumi Jugo Ryu Jujutsu

The ancient art of the Samurai redesigned for the modern day.

Jujutsu is an ancient Japanese martial art which was the Samurai warriors' art of unarmed combat and combat with small arms. A number of well-known martial arts are derived from jujutsu including Aikido and the competition-focused styles of Judo and Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. Southern Cross Bujutsu teaches Tsutsumi Jugo Ryu: a modern form of jujutsu with an emphasis on adapting it to our modern, civilian context and building effective skills for self-defence.

Students learn a combination of fighting techniques, tactics and theory to prepare both their body and mind. Jujutsu techniques include evasions, locking, throwing, immobilisation, blocking and striking techniques with an emphasis on using the opponents' strength against them. Whilst the emphasis is on empty-handed techniques, weapons are taught to higher grades. TJR Jujutsu includes techniques for defending against bladed weapons, sticks and firearms. Weapons used within the system include the tanbo (short stick/baton), jo (4ft stick), hanbo (3ft stick), yawara stick, manrikigusari (weighted chain) and sword.
